9/11: IN YOUR OWN WORDS
September 10, 2011 - Daytona Beach News-Journal

After 10 years, it is a logical time to contemplate the ongoing impact
the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks have had on our lives. It is certainly
appropriate to begin by remembering, thanking and honoring the
hundreds and thousands of first responders and military heroes for
their past, present and future role in protecting us and keeping our
nation safe. Some gave their lives. Many still give. They remind us
that American heroes will always rise up in our darkest hours.

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when the
attacks occurred. Those memories continually remind me that there
are those among us who hate us and despise the freedom we
represent enough to want to kill us, even if they die with us. The
terrorists succeeded in rocking our world on Sept. 11. But they did
not, and I trust will not ever, dampen our resolve to forever be "the
land of the free and the home of the brave" and "one nation under
God."

I will always cherish the legacy of Todd Beamer, the all-American
hero who led the passengers in a counter-attack against the
terrorists aboard United Flight 93. He didn't say "life isn't fair" or
lament "why me?" No. He and other passengers aboard assured
that United Flight 93 did not hit its target, thought to be the White
House or our U.S. Capitol. Todd and the passengers of United Flight
93 didn't just protect structures, they protected the heart and soul of
our nation. They gave us hope in the midst of one of our nation's
darkest hours. When Todd said, "Let's roll!" he and the other
passengers died as heroes protecting the future of freedom for all of
us.

"Let's roll!" has become a rallying cry for all Americans. Especially
now, let's never forget what our Sept. 11 heroes did to protect our
nation.

Now it is our turn. Who will step up to be the leaders and heroes our
nation needs today? We must not let their sacrifice go in vain.

Let's roll!
